When it’s time to move, it’s a fair bet that not all of your belongings will make the journey with you. But although you might have thought about where you’ll donate clothes or a piece of furniture, there’s a good chance that you’ve overlooked planning for an important part of your house: the pantry.
When it comes to packing, cans and other nonperishable food items can be low on the priority list. But instead of throwing away unwanted food or lugging it along with you, Allied has a simple solution that helps your community and supports an important cause.
By partnering with the nonprofit organization Move For Hunger, Allied Van Lines is helping keep food pantries full in the U.S., where more than 40 million people face hunger each day. At Allied, giving back to the communities in which we live and serve is something we’re passionate about; it’s embedded in our company values and it’s part of who we are. By teaming up with Move For Hunger, which is working to mobilize the relocation industry to reduce food waste and feed those in need, we’re able to make a difference — all while delivering the top-quality moving services you’ve come to count on.
Donating your nonperishable food through our Move For Hunger partnership is designed to be easy. During your move, just ask your Allied move consultant to provide a Move For Hunger box — you can set aside any unwanted, unopened food items there. Then, your designated Allied crew will collect your donations at the end of the move and ensure they’re delivered to local food pantries.
Since our partnership with Move For Hunger began in 2013, Allied Van Lines has transported more than 5 million pounds of food, which translates to over 4 million meals.
We’ve been able to do this thanks to the dedication of our agents across the country. More than 120 have joined the Move For Hunger network, and we’ve seen agents like Bayshore Moving & Storage, based out of Newark, Delaware, donate more than 990,000 meals. Others, like Coleman Worldwide Moving in the Atlanta metro area, and Reebie Storage & Moving Co. in the Chicago metro area, have cleared the 100,000-meal milestone.
But our work isn’t done. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated food insecurity, and Feeding America estimates that 1 in 7 people — including 1 in 5 children — may have become food insecure in 2020.
Food waste is also an enormous concern in America: About 40% of food grown, processed and transported in the U.S. each year goes to waste. But, according to The National Resource Defense Council, if we were able to rescue just 15% of that wasted food, we could save enough to feed 25 million Americans each year.
Allied is committed to continuing our partnership with Move For Hunger and doing our part to fight back against food insecurity. By helping our customers find an easy alternative to throwing away nonperishable food items, we hope to do our part to not only lessen waste but help feed our communities.
Throughout our 90+ history, Allied Van Lines has made it clear that we don’t want to be just another moving company. Giving back is built into our DNA, and fighting food insecurity is a powerful way we can help make an impact in the communities we proudly serve.
We also know customers want to support companies that are invested in giving back — they want to see their own values reflected in the business they support. In fact, a 2019 survey from Aflac found that more than 75% of consumers said they were more motivated to purchase from companies committed to making the world better.
We want our customers not only to trust that they’ll receive the highest-quality move through Allied but also know that they can be proud to use our services. Allied Van Lines remains committed to helping our communities and fighting food insecurity across the country.
